PhD project:
"The Kurdish Uprisings in Turkey during the 1920s and 1930s"

The conflict between the Turkish State and the Kurdish population is one of the crucial factors in the history of Turkey until now. Political debates and decisions in many, quite different fields from education to foreign affairs can be traced back to the "Kurdish Matter". Furthermore, the conflict is of significance for the historical development and the current situation of the entire Middle East due to Kurdish populations in many countries. There they have produced relevant actors, besides in Turkey also, for example, in Syria and Iraq. By analysing its history, the thesis will widely improve the understanding of the current conflict between the Turkish State and the Kurdish population. So far both political and scientific approaches to the "Kurdish Matter" have focused on the present without developing a historical framework. So far connections between the 'homogenisation' policies of the Turkish State and the Kurdish uprisings in the 1920s and 1930s have been neglected including their possible implications on the actual political situation. Contrary to that the dissertation centres its historical analysis on the 1920s and 1930s as a crucial stage for the development of the Turkish national state and its ties and relations to the Kurdish population.
